Who Says Waste Can’t Be Sustainable? – Three Eco-Friendly Plumbing Options for Your Home

Here at Brock Builders, we tend to get pretty passionate about all things sustainable, especially when it comes to custom home designs and home renovations. One thing we get asked a lot is what eco-friendly options are available when it comes to piping and plumbing. So, let’s take a deeper look into how you can make your waste more sustainable!

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel pipes are a great option if you’re looking for something that’s both environmentally friendly and durable. Many stainless steel plumbing materials are designed to last 50 or more years. Additionally, stainless steel piping is non- toxic, easy to clean, and 100% recyclable.

PEX Pipes

If you’re looking for a sustainable plumbing option that won’t break the bank, PEX pipes might be a good fit for you! Since PEX pipes come with a smaller footprint than most of their competitors, the wait time for water is decreased, thus resulting in less overall water waste. As an added bonus, Uponor, the creator of PEX pipes, claims to recycle and repurpose 99% of all of their scrap materials.

Brass

Another great option for sustainability in your waste management system is brass piping. Similar to stainless steel and PEX piping, brass pipes are extremely durable and lasting. Additionally, brass can also be easily recycled. Brass piping will generally cost less than stainless steel, but more than PEX.

The Dark Side of Standard Piping Options

PVC piping is the most commonly used piping option in residential homes today. However, these piping choices certainly don’t come without negative environmental impacts. PVC piping is known to contaminate water with harmful and toxic chemicals. In fact, PVC is considered to be the most toxic plastic for our health and environment. Additionally, PVC is extremely difficult and expensive to recycle.
