We get it. There’s a lot that goes into designing your dream home! But even though this can be overwhelming at times, it’s also what makes building an Asheville custom home so exciting and enjoyable. When you go from buying prefabricated homes to building one of your own, you’re faced with choices you may not have considered in the past. One of the big ones is whether you’d like a two-story or a one-story home. Much more than just your own personal preference can influence this choice, including resale value, home design, and your future! Today, we’re going to get into the details to help you think through what you might want to choose for your custom home!
INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS
First, we’d like to emphasize that neither a one-story or a two-story is necessarily more valuable or a better choice for your home. They each come with their own pros and cons to think over. One-story homes have a longevity to them that is attractive to aging populations. Even if you build the home when you’re still quite young, you can easily live there into old age without having to modify the flow of the property. On the other hand, two-story homes allow you to utilize less square footage as you add space on the next level up instead of expanding over more of your property. Typically, building up costs less by the square footage than building out, so there’s another point to keep in mind.
DAY-TO-DAY
A lot of this decision, however, comes down to how you live your life and how your family will use the space. There are some wonderful ceiling design options available to one-story homes, such as skylights and tall ceilings, that can have a huge effect on the look and feel of the space. If you want to create dramatic rooms, this is a great consideration. Single-story homes are also less expensive to heat and cool, and cleaning is a much simpler task when you don’t have to lug a vacuum cleaner upstairs. But if you have a bigger family, you might want to think about a two-story home. With multiple levels, you’ll give the people in your family more privacy. Typically, homes with two stories tuck their bedrooms on the second floor while keeping the lower floor focused on common areas.
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
One further benefit of a two-story home is the beautiful views you get from the rooms upstairs. Asheville is a gorgeous part of the country, and your property is meant to be enjoyed! Take in the trees and mountains around you from a high vantage point and at the same time, enjoy a bigger yard space from choosing to build vertically instead of horizontally!
This is a big choice and can have a huge impact on the building process of your custom home.
