Fall brings with it wonderful, crisp weather, fun holidays, and, for the homeowners among us, a to-do list to keep our properties at their best. We often feature checklists for Asheville custom home care through different seasons because we not only want to encourage our audience to keep up with maintenance, but we also want to emphasize how much you save in the long run by putting consistent effort into your property instead of leaving issues to turn into much bigger problems down the line. With that said, we’d like to share our list of maintenance tips to ensure your home is ready for the cooler weather ahead!
SAFETY FIRST
To begin with, it’s time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re operating correctly and have fresh batteries. Indoor air quality is important year-round but becomes a much more central concern when we enter fall and winter and spend more time inside. And while we’re on the topic of air quality, make the rounds to all of your exterior vents and give them a good cleaning and lubricating to ensure they continue working properly.
CLIMATE CONTROL
Before the chilly weather turns downright cold, we recommend you have your HVAC systems serviced. Even better, set yourself up with a preventative maintenance program with a trusted HVAC company so you don’t have to remember to make appointments. And in that line of thinking, it’s a good time to check the sealing around your doors and windows. If these deteriorate, you’re basically throwing money away as your home system fights a losing heating battle overtime.
LANDSCAPING AND EXTERIOR WORK
Fall is a great time to clear your yard of large sticks and debris and re-mulch around your landscaping. And for an even lusher lawn next summer, it’s a good idea to weed and fertilize all over your property. And since you’re outside already, why don’t you go ahead and check in with all of your lawn equipment and have anything serviced so it’s in good shape before the end of the season. But we’re not done yet! Our home’s roof is one of the most important things to maintain and we recommend having it inspected frequently. If you didn’t have it cared for in the summer, now’s the time to have it looked at. And what’s a roof without functioning gutters? Grab the ladder and get to cleaning! You’ll want to clear your gutter of any leaves or debris to keep your property in good condition, especially with the kind of rain and snow we get in the Asheville area!
STAY OUTSIDE A LITTLE LONGER
It turns out, there’s a lot to do on the exterior of your home before winter comes. It’s a good idea to make a plan of when you’ll bring your outdoor furniture inside. The wicker chairs and seating will need to be stored indoors to keep them in good shape while there’s snow outside! And speaking of snow, when was the last time you tested your winter supplies? Take a moment to take a look at your snowblower and make sure you’re stocked with salt and shovels in case the winter is intense.
