End-of-year checklist—check out the old, check in the new

December is a great time of year to take an annual inventory of your home and property. If you’ve been reading our blog, you know we like checklists. They’re helpful tools to maintain your home and property, and check if everything’s in good shape or determine what needs to be replaced. We covered some of this in our October 29, 2021 blog post, but some of these steps are good to do more than once a year, plus we’ve added some additional things to check.

Keeping up with the maintenance of your home is good for your safety and budget, protects your home’s value and investment, and will save you money in the long run as well. In this blog we’ll focus on maintenance checks for the exterior of your home. And remember, Brock Builders is always here if you need help or have any questions.

At this time of year, many of us are preparing for the holidays. It’s a good time to give your windows a thorough exterior cleaning, which will keep them in good shape for a long time and provide clear views of those snowy winter days and outside decorations.

Do you have a patio? Is it in good shape? Determine if any repairs need to be made and call a professional if you’re not sure you can fix them yourself. Clear and clean the gutters. And clean up any fallen leaves, especially before it snows, to ensure your spring lawn will be healthy. Taking these steps will make the outside of your home safe for everyone.

Address any landscaping issues. Check your outdoor garden hose, inspect drains for blockages, check for any rust. If you decorate for the holidays, you may want to contact a professional to inspect inside and outside lighting outlets.

December is also a good time to look around your home to check for any holes, especially around your home’s foundation or around basement windows, which should be caulked. Sealing these holes is important to prevent any infestations. While inspecting the foundation of your home, which should be done a few times a year, look for any cracks or anything unusual. Consider contacting a professional immediately to address these concerns, and Brock Builders is always here to guide you.

Check for issues with your exterior siding to make sure it is safe and secure. Look for cracks, warps, dents, issues with joints, bulging—and if you need professional advice, contact Brock Builders. Consider a thorough pressure wash for the exterior of your home, but make sure your exterior materials can withstand the power wash.

As discussed in one of our fall blog posts, we recommend having your roof inspected in the fall, but winter is a good time to check if icicles are forming around your roof. If so, that could be a sign of an insulation issue in your home. Call Brock Builders and we’ll be happy to take a look for you.

It’s a busy time of year, but doing these annual maintenance inspections are a great way to keep you and your family safe in your home, as well as protect your investment. Brock Builders is always happy to answer any questions you may have. Give us a call today.
